“The sheer magnitude of traumatic
brain injury in the military is enough
to make anyone’s head hurt”*

CBS was developed in collaboration with the US Defense Force and used downrange in Iraq and Afghanistan to assist in the accurate measurement of mild and moderate traumatic (mTBI) brain injuries.

The nature of the daily activities of a soldier in the field exposes them to numerous scenarios where a mTBI can occur. In addition to the physical effects of an mTBI, a concussive injury can also clearly disrupt their decision-making process. In the case of a soldier, this can magnify to a life or death situation.

A number of recent studies have also shown that soldiers who have suffered a traumatic brain injury or an mTBI have an increased risk of suffering from PTSD, and an increased risk of committing suicide. Those who have experienced an mTBI from an explosion(IED) can suffer molecular changes, that later in life lead to neuroinflammation and degeneration, and a greater risk of Parkinson’s disease. Other post-concussion symptoms such as mood swings, anxiety, difficulty concentrating and confusion, can have a major effect on long term employment and daily family life.

CBS, with its ability to accurately and consistently monitor a person’s balance (a major indicator of general health and well-being), and cognitive performance through the use of gold standard force plate technology and patented software, allows an objective decision to be made in real time.  Understanding the progression and regression of a soldier’s health allows more correct decisions to be made about their treatment requirements.
