Children younger than adolescents
aged 15-19 and individuals older than
75 are the most vulnerable to suffering
from a Traumatic Brain Injury.
This is a major global health issue.

Although sports-related concussions are regularly discussed, concussions are prevalent in daily life and are of major concern from both a health and cost perspective for governments.

Think about the young child that falls off the lounge or out of their cot, the child that bumps their head on the table, the family member that falls off their bike, or even the ladder when they are fixing something, and the parent or grandparent that slips and falls in the bathroom. These are everyday occurrences that can result in a head knock and a possible concussive event. Concussions are not limited to the sports field.

A health-first approach needs to be taken towards the assessment, management and treatment of mTBI’s, especially given the potential long-term consequences if an incident is overlooked, ignored or not treated correctly.

Strategies need to be improved to educate society with regard to the symptoms of concussion and the benefits of talking a proactive approach to the management of a concussion. Increased consideration needs to be given to return-to learn, return-to work and return-to play decision- making to ensure that the injury is given sufficient time to recover fully. This would  avoid prolonged or long term effects, or worse still exposure to the potentially fatal second impact syndrome.

CBS, with its ability to accurately and consistently monitor a person’s balance (a major indicator of general health and well-being) and cognitive performance through the use of gold standard force plate technology and patented software, allows objective-decision making to be made in real time.  Understanding the progression and regression of a patient’s health allows more correct decisions to be made concerning treatment requirements and minimizes the chance of experiencing the often debilitating long-term effects of the injury.
